Understanding Your Birth Chart (Kundali): The Basics

A birth chart, or kundali, is a map of where the planets were positioned at the exact date, time and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology, it's the starting point for almost every kind of reading.

The 12 houses

A kundali is divided into 12 houses, each representing a different area of life - for example, the first house relates to self and personality, the second to wealth and family, the seventh to marriage and partnerships, and the tenth to career.

The planets (grahas)

Nine planetary bodies - the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu - are placed within these houses based on their position at your birth. Each planet is believed to influence different life themes depending on which house and sign it occupies.

Your Moon sign vs Sun sign

Vedic astrology places particular emphasis on your Moon sign (Rashi), unlike Western astrology which centres on the Sun sign. Your Moon sign is often used as the reference point for predictions and remedies.

What you need for an accurate kundali

  • Exact date of birth
  • Exact time of birth (as precise as possible - even a 15-20 minute difference can shift house placements)
  • Exact place of birth

Once your kundali is built, an astrologer can discuss specific questions - career, relationships, timing of major decisions - based on the planetary placements and current transits. You can book a consultation with our faculty through the Appointment page.
